Speaking on the 33rd death anniversary of former chief minister MG Ramachandran here, he said, “I would like to inform Seeman that if he criticises MGR it will back fire on him. No political leader in Tamil Nadu, including Seeman can cause a dent to the image and popularity of MGR,” said Jayakumar.

Of late, many politicians, including Makkal Neethi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan and actor Rajinikanth recalled the legacy of MGR and said that they will provide MGR rule in Tamil Nadu if elected.

The AIADMK, through their mouthpiece Namadhu Amma, criticised the actors for trying to appropriate the legacy of MGR and asked them to join AIADMK if they wish to provide MGR rule.

Even Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Kamal were involved in war of words over the legacy of MGR. Meanwhile, in a recent media briefing, when Seeman was asked about the legacy of MGR and actor-turned-politicians Kamal and Rajini trying to appropriate it, Seeman criticised MGR and his rule.

Seeman said that MGR was the first chief minister to convert primary education from Tamil to English, made medical education private by permitting private medical colleges, handed over the rights of Tamil Nadu in Mullai Periyar Dam to Kerala and reintroduced liquor in the state. Seeman also criticised Rajinikanth and Kamal by stating that Tamil Nadu needs the rule of former chief minister K Kamaraj and Kakkar and not the rule of MGR and late DMK supremo M Karunanidhi.

Anniversary observed

Meanwhile, in the midst of COVID-19 scare, AIADMK leaders marched to the memorial of MGR in Kamarajar road and paid respect to him on his 33rd death anniversary. Party convenors O Panneerselvam and Edappadi K Palaniswami, in black shirts, paid floral respect to MGR in the presence of Ministers, party functionaries and cadre.

DMDK too observed the death anniversary of MGR and Periyar at their party headquarters in Koyambedu.
