On Friday, a gang of five men waylaid Abdul Salam, 50, a realtor from Kerala and fled away in his car after threatening him and the driver at knife point in Coimbatore. He was on his way to Kerala from Bengaluru, when the gang intercepted him in a car.
Salam claimed that the car contained a bag with Rs 27.5 lakh. After investigation, the special teams of police found the car abandoned by robbers at Madhampatty on Saturday.
The car was taken to the KG Chavadi police station, where the police stumbled upon Rs 90 lakh in cash bundles kept hidden in secret compartments in the rear of the vehicle during inspection.
Police also found similar secret compartments on the car doors and in the front seats. As they remained damaged and empty, police suspect that the robbers might have already stolen the amount stacked in them.
The seized amount is likely to be handed over to the Madukkarai Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday. As the seized cash is suspected to be hawala money, the police have also informed the Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate.
Special teams of police are also grilling Abdul Salam regarding the seized cash as he had been giving contradictory replies. Further investigations are on to track the gang of robbers.
