In his statement, party's state secretary K Balakrishnan raised suspicion of political interference after the CBI made arrests more than a year taking over the case. "Arrests were made 16 months after the CBI took over the case. This creates suspicion among the public," he said.
Pointing at the arrest of Arulanantham, Balakrishnan alleged that the people belong to the ruling AIADMK are directly connected with the crime and alleged that several other accused are yet to be arrested. "The CBI should arrest all the accused without allowing any political interference and provide security to the survivors," he said.
On Wednesday, the CBI team arrested K Arulanantham — who was the AIADMK Pollachi town students’ wing secretary — and two others, in connection with the case which was brought to light after a 19-year-old woman filed a complaint.
During investigation, the police uncovered that several women were sexually assaulted, filmed and blackmailed by multiple suspects.
The Pollachi rural police arrested Thirunavukkarasu, Sabarirajan, Sathish, Vasantha Kumar and Manivannan after the sexual assault and extortion of money came to light in February 2019. Following a national outrage demanding a detailed probe, the CBI took over the investigations from CB-CID.
