Coastal warning issued as heavy rain expected in southern districts

While Chennai is expected to receive only light rain, districts like Ramanathapuram and Cuddalore would get heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. Owing to the cyclonic circulation in the Comorin Sea, a coastal warning has been issued in anticipation of strong weather.

“Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Cuddalore and Ramanathapuram districts. Heavy rain is likely at isolated places over Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli,” said S Balachander, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

As a result of the cyclonic circulation over the Comorin Sea, which extends up to 4.5 km above sea level, a coastal warning has been issued for fishermen in anticipation of squally weather. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out into the Coumarin Sea, Gulf of Mannar, Maldives, Lakshadeep areas over the next 24 hours.

According to weather blogger K Srikanth, who runs the page Chennai Rains, delta districts will receive scattered rain until January 13. “It will continue till the morning, but it appears the worst is behind them. South TN to get better spells from now, along with parts of west-interior Tamil Nadu. Overall, rains to reduce from January 13 night,” he said.
