Drunk mechanic warned for ruckus runs over SI with load van in Eral

A police Sub-Inspector in Thoothukudi died early on Monday after a man he had pulled up for causing nuisance in an inebriated condition allegedly rammed the victim’s two-wheeler using a load van, police said.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, condoling the death of sub-inspector Balu of Eral police station, announced a relief of Rs 50 lakh to his family while the accused person surrendered before a local court.

In a statement, Palaniswami said Balu and another policeman had on Sunday night reprimanded Murugavel for causing ruckus in an eatery in an inebriated condition.

Later, when Balu was involved in patrolling in the wee hours of Monday, an enraged Murugavel, a mechanic with a goods carrier van, hit the policeman’s two-wheeler from behind, resulting in his death. Constable Pon Subbiah suffered injuries.

Expressing grief over the incident, Palaniswami announced a special component of Rs 50 lakh to the family of Balu, besides Rs 2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund to Subbiah.

“Further, I have directed providing government job to one person from the family of Balu on the basis of qualification,” he added.

Meanwhile, the accused Murugavel surrendered before a local court. Balu is survived by his wife, son and daughter, sources said.

Thoothukudi SP S Jeyakumar, South Zone IG S Murugan, Deputy Inspector General (Madurai Range) S Rajendran and Collector K Senthil Raj placed wreaths during the last rites at his native Mudivaithanenthal, where the funeral was held with state honours.
