Bypoll to fill up a vacant seat in Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu will be held on September 13, the Election Commission said on Tuesday. The Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant following the death of AIADMK member A Mohammedjan on March 23 this year.

As per the ECI notification issued by the Chief Electoral Officer on Tuesday, the election would be held between 9am and 4pm on September 13 and votes would be counted the same day. Nominations could be filed with the returning officer, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Assembly Secretariat, from August 24 to 31 (except holidays). Currently, there are three Rajya Sabha vacancies in the state. Apart from Mohammedjan’s demise, vacancy was necessitated by the resignation of AIADMK leader K P Munusamy and R Vaithilingam who quit the Upper House of the Parliament and got elected to the State Assembly after the April 6 polls.

Assembly Speaker M Appavu also announced that the ongoing budget session of the TN Assembly will end on September 13 instead of September 21 in view of the rural civic body polls in nine districts. The decision was taken at the Business Advisory Committee meeting.
