Chief Minister takes stock at Keezhadi archaeological site

Chief Minister MK Stalin paid a visit to the historically significant archaeological site of Keezhadi in Sivaganga district on Friday and took stock of antiquities, which were unearthed in various phases of excavation at the site, on display.

Stalin’s half hour time at Keezhadi assumes greater significance as it’s his first visit as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, sources said. 

The site boasts of a pre-Sangam (Iron Age) settlement on the banks of river Vaigai and the findings at Keezhadi show evidence of ancient industrial town. Seven phases of excavations carried out so far, discovered several thousands of artifacts from this renowned archaeological site, sources said. 

During the schedule, the archaeological experts explained the significance of artifacts, including monolithic tool, dice of ivory and terracotta pipes, ring well, graffiti and symbols, semi-precious stones such as carnelian, beads, spindle whorls, an ancient tool for weaving, iron machete, bone points, bones of humped bull, broken pieces of pottery and horns. 

Prior to taking stock of the antiquities, Stalin along with Ministers of various portfolios inspected the excavation trenches. Stalin was accompanied by Minister for Industries, Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture Thangam Thennarasu, Revenue Minister KKSSR Ramachandran, Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P Moorthy, Rural Development Minister KR Periyakaruppan, Transport Minister RS Rajakannappan, Minister for Cooperation I Periyasamy, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Social Welfare Minister P Geetha Jeevan. 

Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture, B Chandra Mohan, Sivaganga Collector P Madhusudhan Reddy and officials from Department of Archaeology were present.
