'Minimum tax hike for 1.52 lakh buildings in Chennai'

Chennai: State Municipal Administration and Water Supply minister KN Nehru explained that only 1.52 lakh buildings out of more than 11 lakh buildings are coming under minimum property tax hike of 25 per cent.

Explaining the reasons for the property tax revision, Nehru said that the tax has been increased so that to receive central government funds.

"In total, 83 per cent of the buildings across the State comes under 25 per cent hike. Only 7 per cent buildings will face maximum hike slab of 150 per cent. We will also conduct separate assessments of build up area and vacant area," he added.

Responding to the protests by ADMK, he said that the opposition party hiked property tax in 2018, when it was ruling the State.
