COIMBATORE: The action against the teachers was initiated after more than 200 parents of Muslim children gathered in protest in front of the Government High School at Koralnatham village in Veppanahalli on Friday morning.

The irate parents condemned the teachers for disrespecting their religious sentiments. Muslim students are in majority in the school with 80 per cent of the total 342 hailing from the minority community and most students fast during Ramzan despite attending school.

Out of the two teachers, Shankar, who taught Maths, had told the students that their health will be ruined if they fast. Echoing a similar view, physical trainer Senthil Kumar reiterated that the students will remain tired and might even lose consciousness while playing if they skip meals and remained on empty stomachs.

As the parents staged a protest, a police team from Gurubarapalli police station rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesters. Based on enquiry by senior officials of the Education Department, Chief Education Officer (CEO) KP Maheswari issued an order transferring both the teachers to different schools.

While Shankar was shifted to Karadikkal Government High School near Anjetti, the physical trainer was moved to a school in Thottamanju area. Following the action against the two teachers, the parents withdrew their protest.
