Western Ghats, delta districts of Tamil Nadu to get heavy rains for next 48 hours

Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) Chennai predicted heavy rains over Western ghats and Delta districts of Tamil Nadu for the next 48 hours due to overlay circulation over Sri Lanka.

"Due to overlay atmospheric circulation prevailing over Sri Lanka and adjoining areas, and heat convection - Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Western Ghats and Delta districts is likely to get heavy rains along with thunderstorm activity for the next two days," said P Senthamarai Kannan, Scientist E, RMC.

The official added that from April 11, light to moderate rains to expected at Western ghats and southern districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area due to heat convection.

As far as Chennai is concerned, the sky condition to be partly cloudy. On Friday, the maximum temperature in the city was down by one or two degrees Celsius. The weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 34.5 degrees Celsius and 35.3 degrees Celsius respectively.

The minimum temperature was 27 degrees Celsius and 27.3 degrees Celsius was recorded in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam respectively.

"For the next few days, Western Ghats and south districts of Tamil Nadu to see active spell of rains due to the upper air circulation off Sri Lanka over Equatorial Bay," said Srikanth, a weather blogger.

According to RMC, Coimbatore and Kanniyakumari recorded the highest amount of rainfall with 3 cm each, followed by Thoothukudi with 2 cm, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Tirupattur and Madurai received 1 cm of rainfall each.
