Elephant deaths: HC judges to inspect accident prone SR zone bordering Kovai
Justice V Bharathidasan and Justice N Sathish Kumar of the Madras High Court are to travel between Podanur in Coimbatore district and Palakad in Kerala to inspect the actions made by the southern railways to prevent the death of elephants on tracks as trains hit them.
CHENNAI: The justices who are leading the division bench to hear several matters related to the wildlife and forest issues had recently informed that they would travel down to the places where elephants often die of train accidents.
The judges will visit underpasses built by the southern railways to ease animals to effortlessly pass the track without getting hit by the train. Also, the judges will inspect the fencing arrangements and solar light facilities made by the railway department.
Advocate M Santhanakrishnan, the amicus curiae in the matter, Southern Railways standing counsel PT Ram Kumar, senior counsel Arvind Pandian, T Mohan, Petitioner’s counsels T Lajapathi and R Alagumani to travel along with the judges to assist them during their inspection.
While hearing a batch of writ petitions in connection with elephants protection on March 25, Justice V Bharathidasan and Justice N Sathish Kumar held that they will travel between Palakad and Podanur on April 10.
