Speaking to reporters, after inaugurating a ‘padayatra’ by Human Right Department of Congress party from Coimbatore to Chennai demanding to include fuel prices within the GST tax framework, Alagiri said Amit Shah had put forth his ‘cruel’ idea of imposing Hindi as official language.

“Chief Minister MK Stalin has given a befitting reply to Amit Shah. People in India should have the liberty to speak any language of their choice. But, the intention of Amit Shah is to split India on the lines of Pakistan,” he said.

Claiming that Congress is not against any language, he said that imposing Hindi among non-Hindi speaking states is against the Constitution as India is a nation with diverse languages.

“English should be allowed to remain as the official language, until people wish,” he said adding the BJP is trying to bring an economic crisis.

Stating that people in India will take a decision, albeit delayed to oust BJP, Alagiri said just like how the AIADMK government was thrown away after 10 years, a change will happen at the Centre also.

Pointing out that when Congress brought GST with a low and uniform tax, the BJP did not support the reform. “But the BJP now blames Congress for bringing the GST. Our demand is only against high GST, which shouldn’t go beyond 18 per cent,” he said.
