Five member gang held for bid to sell copper as iridium in Thanjavur
Thanjavur police arrested a gang of five persons, who attempted to sell copper material as iridium for Rs 50 lakh on Wednesday.
Sources said that acting on a tip off that a gang of five were involved in waylaying on bypass road on the outskirts of Thanjavur, a team of the Taluk police, led by Inspector Jagadeeswaran, rushed to the spot on Wednesday morning. On seeing the police, the gang attempted to escape from the spot, but the cops chased and secured all the five.
During interrogation, they were identifed as A Ganesan (34) from Pudupattinam near Mudukulathur in Ramanathapuram district, G Muneeshwarar (31), from Nedungulam, M Muneeshwaran (32) from Pudumadam, R Kannan (32) and R Chinnamuthu (24), from Andipatti in Theni district.
Further inquiries revealed that the gang came to Thanjavur with a plan to sell copper material as iridium. The gang has been claiming that having iridium at home would bring good fortune. Though a man from Thanjavur agreed to arrange parties for the gang to sell the ‘iridium’ for Rs 50 lakh, he was not able to find any buyer.
As the gang members did not have money for their daily expenses, they were involved in waylaying for the past two days, the police said.
Subsequently, the police registered a case and arrested all the five. Later, they were produced before the court and were lodged in the prison.
