ITIs across State to transform into tech centres

As part of the new scheme, the Director of Employment and Training has proposed to upgrade the ITIs technically and keep them up-to-date and relevant to impart the most effective skill training to the young and aspiring students.

A senior official from the School Education Department told DT NEXT that the objective of this scheme was to introduce skill training in latest technologies to the youth of Tamil Nadu in 71 government ITIs against the total of 91. “This will also be extended to other ITIs shortly,” he added. “During the first phase, the scheme is expected to benefit more than 25,000 trainees.”

Since industry 4.0 is the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies, he added that the centres would teach skills that are relevant to sectors such as Industrial Robotics and Digital Manufacturing, Mechanic Electric vehicles, Basics Design and Virtual Verification, and Manufacturing Process Control and Automation and Advanced Manufacturing.

“Additionally, short term skill training will also be introduced in areas such as Electric Vehicle Maintenance, Robotics, Automation, CAD/CAM, CNC Machining, Advance Plumbing and Additive Manufacturing,” he said.

Transformation of ITIs as technology centres will be outsourced from a company involving experts in the required field. “The appointed agency will train ITI students with industrial experiential learning to improve employability,” he averred. “It will also support the enhancement of training, counselling and placement cells by engaging with local and global partners in the industry and training partners too.”

It has also been decided to upgrade the existing facilities at ITI by installing new technology tools. “The selected ITIs will make available 10,500 square feet of space each for technology centres,” he explained. “Structural works will start soon; it would be ready by the next academic year.”
