2 devotees die in Madurai Chithirai festival rush, 11 others rescued

MADURAI: Two persons died as the crowd surged in Madurai on Saturday on the occasion of Lord Kallazhagar's entry into the river Vaigai as part of the annual Chithirai festival. The deceased have been identified as Selvam of Uthamapalayam, Theni district and the other victim, a woman aged about 65, is yet to be identified. The incident happened at Goripalayam.

The significant event began at 6.20 am., in the midst of a huge crowd after a gap of two years.

Commercial Taxes Minister P. Moorthy regretted the demise of two devotees saying it was unfortunate. Eleven more devotees who were stuck in the crowd have also been rescued and admitted to GRH and are out of danger.

Chief Minister MK Stalin condoled the death of devotees and enquired about the health of those admitted to the GRH. Compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the deceased and Rs 1 lakh to eleven other victims will be given. Further, the Minister said festival arrangements were adequate since April 4.
