8 teams, 2 drones join search for rescued calf’s mother elephant

COIMBATORE: Eight teams of the Forest Department were on their toes in search of a mother elephant to reunite with its rescued calf in The Nilgiris.

On the third day of the search, the Forest Department deployed two drones to look for the mother elephant in interior forest areas. Besides this, the Forest Department staff reached out to tribal settlers to check if they spotted any mother elephant.

However, the day ended without any clue on the adult female elephant. The Forest Department took up the hunt for the mother elephant following the rescue of the one-month-old elephant, which was swept away in the gushing waters of Sigurhalla River near Mavanallah on August 29.

On Monday, the calf was sent along with two elephants believing one among them to be its mother. However, they abandoned the calf, as it does not belong to their family. Therefore, the Forest Department has once again made attempts to search for its mother. The calf is fed intermittently with liquid foods and is in good health.
