Heavy rains in TN to take break from next week

CHENNAI: Heavy rains lashing several districts of Tamil Nadu, is likely to take a break from September 9 as the atmospheric circulation over TN moves towards Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The maximum temperature is expected to rise more than usual in the coming days.

Due to a downward atmospheric circulation prevailing over some parts of Tamil Nadu, the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai predicted heavy to very rain to occur over the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Thenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari .

And heavy rain is expected to occur in Erode, Tirupur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Karur, Tliruchy, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipettai, Tiruvannamalai and Kallakurichi districts till Thursday (September 8).

"Rain is likely to reduce gradually across the State, as the circulation pattern moves towards Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. So, heavy rain will lash the neighbouring states from next week. Tamil Nadu will witness a break from rain until the circulation pattern is formed in the coastal region," said P Senthamarai Kannan, Scientist E, RMC.

As far as Chennai is concerned, the sky is likely to be partly cloudy. Some areas are likely to get light to moderate rains along with thunderstorm activity during the evening. The weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 34 degree Celsius and 36 degree Celsius respectively on Monday.

"For the past few days, the State experienced a dip in the maximum temperature. However, it is expected to increase to normal and at times to rise one or two degrees Celsius more than usual in Chennai and other districts," said the official.

According to RMC, during the last 24 hours, the highest amount of rainfall recorded in Pudukottai was 10 cm, followed by Sivaganga, Dharmapuri, Salem, Kanniyakumari , the Nilgiris and Coimbatore received 7 cm each; Tiruchy and Thanjavur 6 cm rainfall each.
