CHENNAI: Parents of students studying at a private school in Kaniyamoor of Kallakurichi district indulged in a sudden protest on Tuesday urging the district administration to open the school and begin offline classes for all students. If no action is taken, the parents warned to hold a hunger strike at the earliest.

On July 14, a Class 12 girl studying at a private school and residing at the school hostel was found dead at the premises. Following this, a violence broke out on July 17 and a mob torched school properties such as buses and certificates of students and teachers at school.

Following the riot, the students of classes 9 to 12 were moved to nearby schools for offline classes, while other classes are being held in online mode.

Owing to delay in reopening schools, parents urged that the education of the students are being affected due to school closure and urged to reopen classes soon. However, district administration sources recently stated that due to on-going investigation and renovation of damaged buildings, handing over the school to the owners or reopening will be delayed for a few more weeks.

Meanwhile, in August, the Madras High Court ordered bail to two teachers, secretary Shanti, correspondent Ravikumar and principal Sivasankaran against Rs 10,000 bail amount. The court gave the verdict as it concluded that no substantial evidence of rape or murder was found as reasons to girl’s death.
