4 tribal families evacuated, shifted to relief camps

COIMBATORE: Sixteen persons from four tribal families from Gudalur in the Nilgiris were evacuated and shifted to a relief camp after rains inundated their houses on Monday.

“Of the total 12 tribal families residing at Thorapalli, four have been shifted to camp, as their houses were worst affected due to inundation. Heavy rains lashed out in Devala and Padanthorai in Gudalur, but there were no major issues in those areas,” said an official of the revenue department.

A low-level bridge near Theppakadu was flooded resulting in suspension of vehicle movement. Braving rains, a group of youth joined hands to remove mud fallen on the road in Machikolli area of Devarsholai town panchayat.

Similarly, mud slips were reported in Naduvattam and disrupted vehicle movement on Ooty-Mysore national highways for a while.

Train services between Coonoor and Udagamandalam on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) have been suspended after a huge tree got uprooted and fell on the track near Lovedale. Coonoor-Udagamandalam passenger special (Train No 06141), scheduled to leave at 7.45 am and Udagamandalam-Coonoor passenger special (Train No 06139), scheduled to leave at 9.15 am, were cancelled, leaving tourists disappointed.

On receiving information, the fire and rescue personnel removed the fallen tree from the track after a few hours. It was then that the Mettupalayam-Udagamandalam train passed through Lovedale at 11.20 am.
