Series of petrol bomb attacks on right wing establishments in TN

CHENNAI: A series of petrol bomb attacks on right wing establishments across Tamil Nadu was witnessed since Friday.

Following this, BJP executives, including Tamil Nadu party chief Annamalai, have submitted a petition to DGP Sylendra Babu to provide tight security to them.

Petrol bombs hurled near Chennai:

Closer to the State capital, Chennai, unidentified miscreants hurled petrol bomb (molotov cocktail) at the residence of a RSS functionary in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Chitlapakkam. The incident happened during the early hours of Saturday. No person was injured or no property damage was caused except for the burnt footwear, police sources said.

The sources added that the incident happened around 4 am. The occupant, Seetharman (62), a district co-ordinator in RSS, was inside the house with his family and the family members rushed out on hearing a loud thud.

A small fire was put out by the family and the neighbours who came to the rescue. Tambaram City Police rushed to the scene on information and began investigations. Preliminary investigations revealed that a bike-borne duo had carried out the attack. Police are collecting CCTV footage in the neighbourhood to ascertain the identity of the suspects.

In Chennai city, police have heightened security in front of BJP headquarters, Kamalalayam, on Vaidyanathan Street in T Nagar.

In other parts of TN:

In Coimbatore region alone, seven such incidents were reported, including one near the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) party office on VKK Menon road.

In Kovaipudur in Coimbatore, unidentified persons had hurled petrol bombs at the residence of an RSS functionary on Friday night, after which security was heightened in the region.

Apart from the incident near the State capital, petrol bombs were hurled at the shop of a BJP functionary, Senthil Paulraj at Kudaiparaipatti in Dindigul district on Saturday.

Security was tightened in neighbouring Chengelpattu district too, according to police sources.

‘Related to PFI leaders’ arrests’

BJP leaders have been attributing the attacks to cadres of the PFI (Popular Front of India), drawing parallels to the arrest of PFI leaders across the country by NIA (National Investigative Agency). Tamil Nadu Police have not made any arrests so far.
