TRANSTAN honours pvt hospital for highest number of liver transplants

CHENNAI: Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) presented Award of Appreciation in three categories for liver transplantation for the years 2021–2022.

The state government honoured Rela Hospital as the "Pioneer in Liver Transplantation” and health department handed over the award to Prof Mohamed Rela and his liver transplant team.

Dr Mohamed Rela and his team received an appreciation award for performing the highest number of paediatric liver transplants during the 2021–2022 period under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.

Rela Hospital received the award for the excellent performance of liver transplantation in Tamil Nadu during 2021–2022.

These awards of appreciation are the highest accolades given to hospitals across Tamilnadu that raises awareness of organ donation and performs organ transplantation as well.

The officials from TRANSTAN say that the number of organ donations were impacted during the pandemic and private hospitals should encourage more number of people to come forward for organ donation.

Meanwhile, Meenakshi Mission Hospital - Research Centre honoured as many as 100 blood donor institutions including colleges and social service organisations from Tamil Nadu were awarded in recognition of their exemplary contributions to blood collection drives in recent years by a private hospital.Sethu Institute of Technology, Virudhunagar bagged the first prize.

Talking about the importance of blood donation, Dr S Gurushankar, Chairman, Meenakshi Mission Hospital - Research Centre, Madurai, said, “India faces an annual deficit of about 4 million blood units. Every day 12,000 people die in our country for want of donated blood.

If we can create enough awareness among the public as to how safe and beneficial donating blood is, and create adequate infrastructure for blood collection, processing, and storing, we can save thousands of lives. At the same time it is important to recognise blood donor organisations, who are striving to make the country self-sufficient in blood supply".
