Northeast monsoon to hit TN on Oct 29

CHENNAI: The Northeast monsoon is likely to commence on October 29, 2022. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall is expected in various parts of Tamil Nadu for the next few days.

"With setting in of northeasterly winds in the lower tropospheric levels over Bay of Bengal and extreme South Peninsular India, monsoon rains are likely to commence over Southeast Peninsular India from around 29th October, 2022," regional meteorological centre (RMC) stated.

The Northeast monsoon was initially expected to begin on October 20 and after a slight delay, rains are expected to lash various parts of Tamil Nadu during the weekend.

Apart from the northeasterly winds, a cyclonic circulation over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and a trough extending between South Interior Karnataka and the southwest Bay of Bengal across Tamil Nadu is likely to influence the weather conditions, the Indian Meteorological Department stated.

Meanwhile, even on Thursday, several parts of Chennai and other districts received occasional widespread rain and on Friday, light to moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu.

From Saturday onwards, rainfall is likely to be heavy at isolated places over Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari.

Meanwhile in Chennai, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Thunderstorm - lightning with light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperature is likely to be around 33 degree Celsius and 24 degree Celsius respectively.
