Steps taken to introduce regional languages in courts: Kiren Rijiju

CHENNAI: Asserting that steps are being taken to bring regional languages into courts, Union Minister for Law and Justice on Friday said he had discussed with high-level judiciary authorities in this regard.

During the 12th convocation of Tamil Nadu, Dr. Ambedkar Law University, the Minister said that bringing regional languages into the court will reduce the gap between common people and the judicial system.

"Court orders are to be published in the local language so that everyone knows them,” he added.

Noting that local and regional languages ​​play an important role in ensuring justice for all, Kiran Rijiju said that it was necessary to establish procedures for drafting the law and its processes in regional languages. He also mentioned that the central government is taking various proactive measures for this.

In particular, the Law Minister stated that the central government is working to create a common vocabulary for words frequently used in legal documents in all Indian languages, digitise words related to law and judiciary, and help the general public know them.

In order not to create a situation where justice is not available to all the marginalised people of the society, the central government started the Nyaya Bandu service in April 2017 to provide free legal aid to all. Kiran Rijiju also said that at present, separate divisions have been set up to provide judicial services in 14 High Courts.

Kiran Rijiju said that 2.32 crore cases have been heard through virtual hearings in all courts and in the Supreme Court alone, 3 lakh cases have been conducted virtually so far. He said that the district and dependent courts in Tamilnadu have been instructed to provide all the basic facilities.

Speaking on the occasion, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi Hon’ble also mentioned how the use of Tamil language in the justice delivery system will make justice accessible to the common man, which is an echo of the enormous love that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has for Tamil language and literature.

He also pointed out that fair and speedy justice is the bedrock of a healthy democracy which will ensure an efficient and accessible justice system for the common man.
