Kovai blast case: HC seeks details of treatment given to accused
It was alleged that NIA officials attacked Azharudhhin hanging him upside down.
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Thursday directed the State Prisons Department to submit the documents related to the medical treatment given to the Coimbatore car explosion case accused Mohammed Asarudeen.
On October 23, 2022 a car explosion took place in front of the Sangameswarar temple at Kottaimedu in Coimbatore. A total of 11 accused suspected to have ISIS links were arrested in connection with the blast. The said accused Mohammed Asarudeen is lodged in the central prison, Puzhal. In this case, Mohammed Yousuf, father of Mohammed Asarudeen moved Madras High Court claiming that Asarudeen was being harassed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) during the custody and seeking an order to provide appropriate treatment for his son. "Mohammed Asarudeen was brutally beaten by NIA police and due to various injuries on his body, the court shall pass the order for an appropriate medical treatment to him," the petition claimed.
When this petition came for the hearing before Justice M Sundar and Justice M Nirmal Kumar, the bench directed the Central Prison, Puzhal authorities to submit the documents related to the treatment given to Asarudeen.
The court also ordered the National Investigation Agency to respond within a week to the petition filed by Asarudeen's father Yousuf and adjourned the hearing.
