Technology giant Microsoft recently partnered with Swedish distillery Mackmyra and announced its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated whisky recipe. AI is the buzzword around the world with the technology quickly being adopted by diverse fields. Now, we stare at a future where AI could be crafting all our drinks and will soon render humans obsolete in the food and beverage industry as well.

This machine-generated recipe created a whiskey that is fruity and oaky, while being golden yellow in colour and smelling of toffee and vanilla. Using machine intelligence, the IT behemoth says it can create millions of recipes of whiskey. The use of AI not only makes the process of whiskey-making faster than when done manually, but allows technology to also come up with new and innovative combinations due to AI’s ability to sift through and calculate large amounts of data. With master distillers spending their whole lives meticulously tasting, tweaking and experimenting to create the best flavours possible, the use of technology can be termed as a path-breaking intervention in the alcohol industry.
