Tech Next: Capture stellar images with these latest phones

The Samsung Galaxy M40 marks the fourth chapter in Samsung’s online-only M series that was conceptualised in India; the M40 currently sits at the top of the heap. The first thing that impressed us was the form factor. It’s under 170 gms despite sporting a stunning 6.3-inch FHD+ Infinity-O display (1080 x 2340 pixels), that is reminiscent of Samsung’s flagship S10 line.

It’s just 7.9 mm thick with a display that is truly immersive. A tiny cut-out for the front cam makes sure that you have a wonderful viewing experience — perfect for videos on the go. At its heart is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 octa-core processor with 6GB of RAM. The device sailed through our benchmark tests. There’s 128GB of Internal memory plus support for external memory up to 512GB. The 3500 mAh battery won’t let you down, while the 15W USB type C fast charging feature is a cool touch.

The rear shooter features a triple-lens set up — a 32MP primary cam, a 5MP depth camera and an 8MP ultra-wide lens. The wide-angle lens is a great feature to have and it’s good to see this trickle down to mid-range smartphones. Both the rear cam and the 16MP selfie cam shoot good images in optimal light. You can shoot slow-mo, hyperlapse and 4K videos with this capable shooter. The Samsung Galaxy M40 is probably the phone to beat in the sub Rs 20,000 price band (Rs 19,990)

Honor 20 PRO:

The Honor 20 PRO is our favourite among the brand’s new trio of Honor 20 devices and boasts of a flagship-quality camera. The rear shooter integrates four lenses. The primary lens in this quad-cam is the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor that features an advanced AI Ultra Clarity mode and AIS Super Night mode. The highlight of the Super Night Mode is the camera’s f/1.4 aperture that has a significant impact on lowlight photography.

Aside from stellar lowlight photography, the other big game changer in this segment is 30X digital Zoom (or 3X lossless optical zoom) that allows you to zero in on subjects from a distance; the quad cam features an 8MP Telephoto lens. There’s also a 16MP Super Wide Angle Camera and a 2MP Macro Camera, which allows users to capture wider and closer with Dual Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). A 32MP selfie shooter adds to the Honor 20 PRO’s camera credentials.

A 6.26-inch, all-view display with a 91.7% screen-to-body ratio is the other highlight. We like the placement of the fingerprint sensor — on the right side of its aluminium frame. The device is propelled by a Kirin 980 chipset that combines with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of Internal memory. There’s a 4,000 mAh battery coupled with HONOR supercharge that powers up the device in quick time. Serious gamers will be pleased to know that the device is equipped with GPU Turbo 3.0 that bolsters gaming capabilities. (Rs 39,999)
