Smartphone knocks it out of the park with night mode
Apple’s 2019 line-up of iPhones have just arrived in India. The iPhone 11 with its dual cam and aggressive price tag might end up being the popular choice. But it’s the feature-packed iPhone 11 Pro, with a triple rear cam and vibrant display that we put under the scanner in our deep dive.

The first thing you will notice is the triple-cam set up on the rear. Apple has been talking up the camera prowess of the iPhone 11 trio, the Pro versions are both kitted with three 12MP lenses. It’s great to see an ultra-wide angle lens on an iPhone for the first time. That’s not the only highlight, our favourite feature is night mode that works intuitively and delivered stunning results in our tests. Night mode images shot on the 11 Pro look more natural than some of its rivals. Apple also adds slow-mo to the selfie cam, which is why ‘slofie’ might soon be a word. The iPhone 11 Pro also aces videos, the improved lowlight performance brings a whole new dimension to iPhone videos.
The other big story is the A13 bionic processor, Apple’s next-gen chip that brings significant performance improvements that we experienced in our tests especially while gaming. Apple’s new iOS 13 (also available on quite a few other iPhone models) augments the experience. It also makes a marked impact on battery life. Apple claims a four-hour improvement over last year’s iPhone XS, we noticed a significant impact in actual battery usage. The 11 Pro sticks to the notched display that we saw on its predecessor. It’s the same 5.8-inch OLED display (1125 x 2436 pixels) but the colours get a boost. Apple calls this an XDR (eXtreme Dynamic Range) display that doubles the contrast ratio (vis-à-vis the iPhone XS) and delivers punchier colours. But, ultimately the big story about the iPhone 11 Pro and the Pro Max is the improved camera, it’s probably the smartphone camera to beat.(Rs 99,900 onwards)
