Is it true that tingling sensation in toes are an indication of Type 2 diabetes? — Bhairavi Ramesh, Kottur

While diabetes can be a reason for the tingling sensation on toes, it is not the only reason. The tingling sensation can indicate neuropathy, which is the damage caused to nerves. One of the major reasons for it is diabetes. However, it could also be due to conditions  like B12 deficiency or even thyroid issues. In a large section of those with high sugar levels, it could be asymptomatic. I suggest the person gets screened for diabetes and if it is ruled out, look for other conditions. - Dr RP Rajesh, consultant diabetologist

I am three months pregnant, can I dye my hair or go for my routine pedicures? — Priya, Nolambur

Hair dyeing and perming can be undertaken. We advise not to try any new hair dyes as they may cause allergy. Waxing can be done provided it is by a trained person and in a clean environment. Shaving is best avoided as it can cause hair follicle infection.

Manicures and pedicures are safe. Fungal infection of the nails is a common worry. It is better to use a personal set of instruments to avoid infection. Facials using creams that you are not allergic to i.e., those that you have tried earlier are certainly safe. Facials help women to relax and rejuvenate. - Dr Jaishree Gajaraj, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology
