My mother, who is a diabetic, has been having heart burn very often. We have been told by some that it could be GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). What are the implications? Raghunanthan, Medavakkam

I suggest you get it diagnosed by experts. If left untreated, GERD can lead to acid reflux cancer in some cases. Some of the other possible implications include ulcers in the oesophagus and difficulty in swallowing. Asthmatic patients will have increase in symptoms and those without asthma can have asthma-like symptoms, and lung infections. Many might also have a change in voice, develop nodules in vocal cord and for some, there could be excessive enamel erosion. — Dr R Ravi, Gastreoenterologist, Global Hospitals, Chennai

Is it true that certain vaccines have preservatives which can cause autism? Berlyn L, Nungambakkam

Only the multi-dose flu vaccine had very tiny amounts of thimersol as preservatives to prevent contamination. There was some anxiety among parents that it could lead to autism. There is no authentic evidence that a small amount of thimerosal in flu vaccines causes any harm, except for minor reactions like redness and swelling at the injection site. But now only single dose vials are available with no thimersol. — Dr Suba Karthikeyan, Neonatologist & Pediatrician, Motherhood Hospital, Chennai
