Fitness Mantra: Swimming workouts for summer
During the hottest months of the year, it is difficult to find the time to run or walk outside unless you exercise as the sun rises or sets. Even then, the humidity still soaks you like you were in a sauna and in most urban areas like Chennai the air quality can be harmful to your lungs.

Nevertheless, it’s the perfect time to spend some quality hours in the pool. Water provides an excellent opportunity for a full body workout, while keeping pressure off joints. Check out these easy moves to incorporate into your day poolside to burn calories.
Water jogging
Lift yourself up off the pool floor and jog in place for 30 seconds. Then rest for 30 seconds. Rinse and repeat. The jogging will help get your heart rate up and the water provides 360-degree resistance that helps build muscle. If you have access to a pool with a deep end, grab a floatation device and jog there for the added benefit of more resistance.
Tread water
Like jogging, treading water at a moderate pace can help get your heart going. You can do this in the shallow end just by lifting your legs off the bottom and starting the treading motion. This is a good one to do in intervals as well: 30 seconds of treading, followed by 30 seconds of rest.
Leg circles
Standing in the shallow end, lift one leg out to the front, around to the side, and then behind you. Switch legs, and do the same on the other side. Pushing your leg through the water will help tone your leg muscles.
Push ups on the pool steps
Push ups can be tough to master on solid ground. Being in the water means you’re lighter, so they’re much easier to preform there than anywhere else. Standing with your feet on the pool floor, lean your hands down until the meet the first pool step. Bend your elbows and dip down.
