Is it true that one must avoid using ear buds?— Rohit S, Guindy

Usually, we urge our patients to avoid using ear buds right after taking a bath, as it causes trauma to the ear drums and might also be the reason behind the development of boils in the external ear canal in some cases. It might also cause itching in the ears. No specialist will ever suggest that you clean your ears with cotton buds. Penetrating the ear canal could lead to serious injuries that could even make you deaf. Besides, the cotton might also rupture the eardrums which could even lead to hearing loss.

What are the symptoms to identify a failing heart?— Stephen Sam, Tambaram

The symptoms of heart diseases are very ordinary and might not seem worth paying attention to. They include swollen ankles, legs or abdomen, increased urination at night, shortness of breath while doing simple routine activities that should not be causing so much exhaustion, excessive fatigue, dizziness or severe weakness. These symptoms shouldn’t be ignored simply as signs of old-age, and you must immediately seek a doctor’s advice if you experience any of these problems.
