How is one supposed to deal with sports injuries? —Sameer K, footballer

Due to repeated movement sports-persons can fall prey to knee, shoulder and ankle injuries. When repeated ligament injuries are not diagnosed or rehabilitated properly, it can lead to joint damage or conditions like osteoarthritis in 30-40 years. It is therefore important to get a torn ligament treated immediately. Initially, a anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is treated by applying ice of the affected area, elevating the leg, pain medications, physiotherapy and lots of rest. However, if the ACL is torn a ligament repair or reconstruction surgery is recommended to preserve the meniscus and knee joint.

How to get rid of a cold? —Selvan P, Anna Nagar

Avoid any pressure when you are sick, even if it is a mere cold. Getting plenty of fluids thins your mucus and breaks up congestion. It also prevents the headaches and fatigue that dehydration causes. Gargling with salt water is a good way to soothe a throbbing throat as the salt-water eases swelling loosens the mucus. However, if the cold continues, visiting a doctor would be the best option.
