What are the causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis?

- Sumitra M, a resident of Anna Nagar

There are a number of factors responsible for rheumatoid arthritis. The abnormal response of the immune system due to a change in hormones and infectious agents like bacteria or viruses can cause RA. It could also be related to obesity, so it is important to look out for that. It could be triggered by stressful events like physical or emotional trauma. In fact, environmental factors could also play a part in causing RA. Depending on the severity of the problem, doctors could also prescribe surgery to relieve the pressure and pain. It is however important for the patient to pay attention to what triggers the pain.

How is one supposed identify Vitamin D deficiency?

- Soumya M, a resident of Pallavarm

Traditionally family physicians in US ask the parents if they notice sweating over the forehead in the night. That seems to be classical and first sign of deficiency. Bone pain, fatigability and growth pains in children is classical of this disease. 11 AM – 2 PM is the best time for getting vitamin D, as the UV-B is at its best. 10AM -3 PM is still good. Early morning walks in sun is very good for your health but it doesn’t suffice your vitamin D requirement. Not only bones, but muscles, heart, brain, teeth, nerves and pancreas need vitamin D.
