There are a number of myths when it comes to immunisation on its side effects. How are we to know what is true and what is not?
- Vishakha G, resident of Gowriwakkam
It is enough for you to know the facts. Vaccination is the only mode of prevention of many diseases. The immune response to vaccines is similar to the one produced by natural infection. However, the price paid for immunity through natural infection can be as high as birth defects from congenital rubella or even death from tetanus. A baby is exposed to countless organisms every day. The number of organisms injected through immunization is negligible in comparison. Many infections spread regardless of cleanliness. If the children are not vaccinated, uncommon diseases such as polio, may reappear.

What are the important health aspects to be looked into once an individual crosses the age of 60?
- Balaji S, resident of Guindy
If you are near or over 60, your body has changed, and its medical needs are different. Getting the health care, you need from a specialist in geriatric medicine will enable you to remain as active as possible and assist in the recovery from sickness and injury. Listen to your body and when the signs of problems arise, have them checked up. Often there may be signs of age-related problems that you may not notice but which your family members do. Listen to what they have to say and consult a geriatrician.
- Dr M Lakshmypathy Ramesh, Geriatric Specialist
