My snores have become louder during nights, says my spouse. Could it be sleep apnea? But I understand men are more prone to develop it.
Jayanthi (name changed), West Mambalam
The ratio of the disorder between men and women is 1.5:1. This ratio goes to 2:1 for those in the age group between 18 years to 45 years, as there is protection as an effect of hormones. But during pregnancy, women develop it as they gain weight. You have not revealed your age. But a sleep test is essential to diagnose it. I suggest you consult a specialist.

I have been gaining weight in the last few months and I have been told by friends that it could be due to PCOS. I want to know more about it. I am 18 years old? Am I at risk? What are the causes?
Deepa, Villivakkam
Some of the symptoms of PCOS includes weight gain, irregular periods, oily acne-prone skin with excess facial hair. It warrants a visit to gynaecologist who further verifies through scan and blood tests. Causes could vary from weight to genetic predisposition. I see girls as young as 14 with the syndrome and it is a long-time fight and requires follow up.
