I notice rashes and irritation on my skin after using wet wipes. Can wet wipes cause allergies?
-K Shruti, resident of Guindy
Wet wipes contain chemical preservatives sometimes. Also, chemicals are used for the fragrance. The presence of chemicals can lead to burning, itching, red rashes and even blisters. Such problems are common in infants and these wet wipes should be avoided as skin of infants is very sensitive. One can use unscented and plain dry tissues instead of wet wipes. Cotton towel or handkerchief can be used as an alternative.

My two-year-old niece was diagnosed to be born with glaucoma. How can it be treated?
-G Ramadevi, resident of Perumbakkam
Both medical and surgical methods can be used to treat childhood glaucoma. The medical method includes the use of pills and eye drops. The main purpose of this treatment is to reduce the pressure inside the eyes. This will either increase the flow of the liquid from the eyes or decrease its flow. Eye drops will lower the pressure but only for a certain period of time. Glaucoma can’t be cured but it can be controlled, early detection of it can reduce the chances of losing vision. Complete eye-monitoring is needed every year because in case of other eye ailments, the vision can come back which is not the case with glaucoma.
