I am 43-year-old and often have pain in my thighs followed by numbness and burning sensation. Is it any serious medical condition?

—R Sukanya, housewife

Thigh pain can range from a mild ache to a sharp shooting sensation. When the pain is sudden, there’s no apparent cause. If it doesn’t respond to home treatments such as cold pack and rest, you should seek medical treatment. It can be due to a medical condition caused by pressure on the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, called meralgia paresthetica (MP). It may cause tingling, numbness and a burning pain in the outer part of your thigh and taking measures such as wearing loose clothing or losing weight to alleviate pressure may be recommended, while medications can be of help.

I have been suffering from insomnia for many months now. Despite trying to regulate my sleep cycle, it did not help. What can be the cure?

—Vijay Srinivas, IT employee

Insomnia is common in many people due to increased stress and hectic work schedule. However, it can be cured by medications and counselling in case of anxiety disorders. Only the medications cannot help, if the underlying cause such as stress is not addressed. We also need to help cultivate sleep hygiene—habits and practices that help one sleeping well daily.
