How can impairment due to stroke be prevented?
—R Jagan, resident of Tambaram.
One of the biggest reasons for occurrence of impairment due to stroke is non-recognition of symptoms in time. It is therefore critical for people to be aware of the symptoms of stroke, which includes face drooping, arm weakness or difficulty in motor functions and speech difficulty or slurring. The time between moving the patient from the place of stroke occurrence to the hospital is crucial. It would be ideal if the patient receives professional medical care within an hour of occurrence of the stroke, for effective outcome. It is also imperative to follow what we at the American Heart Association call the ‘Life’s simple 7’ concept, which essentially entails maintaining a healthy diet, not smoking, regular physical activity, weight, cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure control, in order to avoid the possibility of getting a stroke.

How can dermatologists help to prevent complications related to psoriasis?
—Raghu Kumar, resident of Perambur
Psoriasis is not just skin deep, and patients are at a higher risk of complications such as heart disease, diabetes, eye disorders and psoriatic arthritis. Dermatologists who have a lot of clinical experience with psoriasis are aware of all the issues associated with this condition and can treat the patient accordingly. This is why patients need to take their medication as prescribed, be regular with their follow-up visits and talk to their doctor about any new physical or mental signs and symptoms that they may have noticed. Psoriasis is a lifelong condition that needs continual care, but with the right therapy and support, patients can get the best possible relief from their symptoms and continue to enjoy a full and wholesome life.
