The tremor originating 174 kilometres under the surface hit Swat district and surrounding areas of Khyber Pakhthunkhwa.

The intensity of the earthquake was recorded 4.4 on the Richter Scale. No major losses have been reported so far, the met department said.

Swat lies in seismic zone and is frequently hit by earthquakes.

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake jolted Pakistan, including the northern areas in October last year, leaving at least 200 people dead and over 1,000 injured due to building collapses, landslides, stampedes and other quake related incidents.

A powerful earthquake of 7.6 magnitude, centered near Muzaffarabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, jolted Pakistan in October 2005, killing over 86,000 people.
