While it had been observed on August 13 of each year by many left-handers since 1976, Left-handers Day was declared by the Left-Hander’s Day Club on August 13, 1997.
The day celebrates their uniqueness and differences, who are from seven to ten percent of the world’s population. Thousands of left-handed people in today’s society have to adapt to use right handed tools and objects.
There’s also a more serious side to the day, which spreads awareness about the special needs of left-handed kids. Also, left-handed people may be more likely to develop schizophrenia because of their enhanced creativity and imagination.
Some of the biggest celebrities and world leaders are lefties. US President Barack Obama signs bills and vetoes with his left hand. Even our very own Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a leftie. Other famous lefties include Ratan Tata, Amitabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar, Albert Einstein, the genius who came up with the relativity theories, Bill Gates, who gave us Microsoft, and Oprah Winfrey, the woman whose entertainment empire has made billions of dollars.
Left handed people are dominated by the right side of their brain, which restraints them from fully exhibiting their emotions. They are also more likely to feel embarrassed and anxious. However, scientists say that left handed people can multi-task, make better decisions etc.
