Indian-American writer’s bio emerges Pulitzer prize runner up

When Breath Becomes Air by the late Paul Kalanithi, the autobiography of a dying surgeon, has emerged a runner-up in the biography category in Pulitzer prize this year.

The book penned by the late Indian-American neurosurgeon follows his quest towards a deeper understanding of death and illness, after he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

Born to Indian parents, he grew up in Arizona and attended Stanford University, University of Cambridge and Yale School of Medicine.

The turn of events came in his life while he was on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon.

Paul died in 2015, while he was working on his book, following a battle with the disease for almost two years. 

When Breath Becomes Air, which features a Foreword by Dr Abraham Verghese and an Epilogue by Kalanithi’s wife, Lucy. Paul and Lucy were blessed with a baby girl, a few months before his death.

Hisham Matar won the biography prize for The Return, his book on his missing father in Libya.
