Nearly 18,000 people have signed an open letter to say "thank you" to Jeremy Corbyn for being a "kind and compassionate" leader, almost a week after his Labour Party suffered its worst election performance since 1935.

The Labour leader has resisted calls to immediately resign, despite losing 60 seats in a crushing defeat in the December 12 general election to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his ruling Conservatives, reports metro.co.uk.

The letter however, praises Corbyn for being a "role model" to the Labour Party while criticising the "extraordinary barrage of attacks" against him.

The hashtag "Corbyn was right" was also tresnding on Twitter as his supporters shared moments claiming to show him on the "right" side of political history.

But the tweets have been denounced as "cultist".

Journalist Piers Morgan tweeted: "So #CorbynWasRight is Britain's current No1 trend. Good old Twitter, always 100% wrong about absolutely everything."

Another wrote: "The one thing this election taught me big time is - Twitter has to be singlehandedly the very worst barometer of how things actually are out there in the real world.

"And until the members and voters of Labour understand this hashtag #CorbynWasRight is wrong, kiss good-bye to power."
