The new station in Chennai, spread over 24,000 sq ft, will create thousands of work opportunities for individuals in TN ‘as we continue to remain committed to our long-term investment in infrastructure and technology in the state,’ said Prakash Rochlani, Director, Last Mile Transportation, Amazon India.

Chennai, compared to rest of TN, has shown a good growth and ‘we have doubled our network from 2018. Last few months have shown rapid growth,’ said Rochlani.

According to him, the company saw long-term investment and growth opportunities in the state, where it continued to be highly focused. ‘Every investment decision is customer-centric. It is the density of customers that determines our investment plans. Better optimisation and faster delivery are our focus areas,’ he said, noting that the company planned its investments based on infrastructure, technology and training/skilling.

In its new delivery station, Amazon has introduced a bunch of technologies that led to better routing of deliveries. Also, the layouts and level of automation (use of different conveyors) were aimed at bringing in more efficiencies, easy to handle systems so that high-velocity situations could be taken care of, Rochlani said.

The company further announced the expansion of its delivery network in TN including cities and towns like Namakkal, Tiruchengode, Sivakasi, Krishnagiri and Tiruvallur. With this expansion, Amazon.in will have more than 120-owned and delivery service partner stations, and over 1,400 ‘I have space’ partners across the state. ‘This 2x growth of the delivery network will enable Amazon to penetrate further into smaller towns across TN and have direct delivery presence in more than 1,200 pin codes of the State with a significant number of customers now being able to enjoy one-day and two-delivery promises,’ he added.

D Ashok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, T Nagar, Chennai, was also present on the launch.
