Cinematographers too tend to get stereotyped, says Bhaskaran

The man behind the lens, KM Bhaskaran said that it is important for a cinematographer to present a story well. “After listening to the script, presentation is another crucial part of filmmaking. A cinematographer needs to know how a story will visually resonate with the audience. It is a tool to convey the story to people. I’m glad that my last two films Kuttram 23 and KKK have been accepted by the audience,” Bhaskaran told DT Next.

When asked about being a part of only one film in the last three years, he said, “I was flooded with offers post Kuttram 23. However, they were all the same genre. I either got a crime thriller or a horror film, which didn’t excite me. Exploring different genres is crucial for a cameraman as well and this isn’t restricted only to artistes or composers. I ensure that I don’t get typecast for my choice of films.” Bhaskaran in a lighter vein added that cinema evolves a lot before he moves from one film to another. “Lenses keep changing and there are new cameras that are introduced every week. A VFX of a film changes according to the camera that’s used in a film. We need to keep upgrading ourselves to be in the scheme of things. I was assisting Vijay Milton and we were the firsts to use digital camera, moving away from the regular film because we realised that digital camera is the future of filmmaking. People who didn’t want to take a chance then suffered a major setback. I am sure, there will be another evolution in cinematography before I begin my next film,” he concluded.
