Upasana’s custom-made latex skirt goes viral

Within minutes, the picture went viral catching the attention of sustainable and slow fashion enthusiasts. The dress was created by a sustainable fashion brand called Cancelled Plans, that is based out of Telangana. Mallika Reddy, the founder of Cancelled Plans, says, “We have a collection that we already made with defected condoms. Upasana liked it and we created a design specially for her with a few modifications. So, we made a custom latex skirt made from defected condoms, and an organza top and tank made from textile waste for Upasana. Though it was a challenge, we were lucky enough to be able to source some textile scraps and rejects from local designers which were crucial in the construction of the garment.”

Mallika says that the brand aims to creatively use materials that are rejected, considered waste, and usually end up in landfills or oceans without even serving their purpose. “We are based out of Telangana and we work with local factories to collect non-hazardous waste – that often is of high grade and unused due to the nature of industrial processes. We then convert these materials into design elements combine them with conventional materials to create useful and durable everyday products. In the future, we will be collaborating with artisans from other places including Tamil Nadu as well,” says Mallika.
