Slice of life: ‘Nothing but hard work will take us forward in life’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
Savitri, 52, a resident of Y block in Anna Nagar West
I have been working as a flower vendor for 40 years, but have tried my hand at different kinds of works. I have been a mason, housemaid and even labourer. For some tasks, I was paid as low as Rs 5 and even 50 paisa.
I had lost my husband to yellow fever after that I raised our two children on my own. I needed money to support my family so I was always on the lookout for the next job. Sometimes, I also pray to god to help me find a new job. All these years of toil has convinced me that nothing other than work will take us forward in life and so, I am willing to work as hard as I can. We should sweat out to bear the fruits of goodness in life.
