Reporter's Diary: After altercation between reporters, top cop to streamline entry of journalists at office
An unpleasant incident when an online reporter locked horns with a few TV journalists at the office of Chennai police commissioner on Tuesday, is now snowballing into a possible decision to ‘streamline’ the entry of journalists into the top cop’s office in Veppery.

The issue, coupled with alleged collection of ‘favours’ by certain journalists, was taken up to the city police commissioner by a group of reporters after which the CoP suggested streamlining the entry of journalists into the office of the city police chief.
City police commissioner K Viswanathan opined that online journalists – particularly web channels—are new players in the field, like the way TV channels were a few years ago and indicated that one player cannot prevent the other from functioning independently.
Reporters further pointed out to the police that several scribes claiming to be represent obscure publications ‘receiving favours’ from complainants promising to highlight their plight on their platform.
The issue came to light on Tuesday when a petitioner stormed into the press room asking explanation from reporters of mainstream papers for not carrying his version despite him ‘spending so much on journalists’.
After listening to these incidents, Viswanathan agreed that there is a need to weed out journalists of suspicious credibility and asked the reporters to come up with ideas to streamline the entry of media personnel into the city police headquarters.
