Slice Of Life: ‘It’s sad that people consume toxic drinks instead of coconut water’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I was born and brought up in Chennai and got married 40 years ago. After my marriage, I came to Perungalathur. I, with my husband, started a tender coconut shop in Srinivasa Nagar. After my husband passed away six years ago, am running the shop. I am living on my own as we didn’t have any children. I buy coconuts from Pollachi. They deliver it to the shop twice a week.
I open the shop at 6 am every day and do not close it before 8 pm. I keep the shop open even on Sunday. I don’t get any rest at all. I make sure that I buy only good produce. I want my customers to be satisfied when they leave my shop. It is sad that the new generation doesn’t know the value of tender coconut. They are spending money on buying harmful packed drinks to beat the heat. Even if they buy tender coconut, they prefer to go to air-conditioned shops. They don’t come here even when my product is cheaper and in better quality. It is all because my shop is on the roadside. As I have no children, I love helping others. After my needs, I spend most of the money on my sister’s children and other kids in need.
