Waste lying under a transformer at Pammal

When DT Next visited the spot, waste was dumped in piles under an electric transformer on the street. In the hope to deter miscreants from dumping it there, residents of the locality built a compound wall around the adjacent vacant plot. When this didn’t bring any result, they painted the wall with pictures of gods expecting that the dumping will stop due to religious beliefs.

Interestingly, the dumping still continues despite the presence of CCTV cameras next to the plot.

“We have tried our best for the past one year by taking various steps to prevent garbage dump here. We have seen no results yet,” M Sreenath, who lives on the street, said.

He added that the staff from TNEB, too, suffer when there is any work on the transformer. “They have to fight the piles of garbage under the transformer first in order to climb it,” he pointed out. Though the residents have lodged several complaints with the municipality, the authorities have not come forward with any working solution.

A senior official from Pammal municipality said that the waste is being cleared daily. “The spot becomes an easy target as it lies vacant,” he added.

Appreciating the measures taken by the residents, he said that the garbage is being dumped after nightfall and they are yet to identify the miscreants.

P Ashokan, another resident, said that the garbage attracts stray dogs and this poses a threat to children and two-wheeler riders.

A TNEB lineman said that the department has escalated the issue with the head office, which, in turn, promised to look into the issue.
