Reporter’s diary: Suspense dies as telephone diaries come out of ‘bribe packet’
It was a suspense-filled few minutes for this reporter, a senior official and his colleagues at the State Education Department.
Chennai
The object that triggered this palpable tension inside the official’s room was a small parcel that was meant for him. A person, who came to deliver the parcel, placed it on the official’s table and left immediately.
As it sat there wrapped in newspaper, the size and shape of the package made everyone think that it might be containing cash, which set off the suspicion that it was bribe money that was meant for the senior government official. That is when the suspense began. The official looked understandably uncomfortable, as everyone, including this reporter, began to eye the package with a curious look.
Convinced that it was bribe amount, all thought he would tuck it inside the table drawer. However, the official wanted to show that he was honest and took it in his hand to unwrap it. But the suspense was not going to end.
Just as he was about to open it in front of everyone, his mobile phone began ringing. After he attended the few calls, it was the turn of some officials, who came in to get his signature on some official files. Finally, the newspaper wrapper was opened.
It was anticlimactic for those expecting to see wads of currency notes, as all it contained was a couple of old telephone diaries that were sent by the official’s friend. The official, who understood the way the whole episode was playing out, commented that it was not the mistake of the curious onlookers, but that of some of the officials, whose corrupt activities have made everyone suspicious.
